This course provides a detailed exploration of managing personal finances, creating a budget, and setting (and meeting) financial goals. We will engage and discuss topics related to personal financial awareness and success and attempt to utilize Microsoft Excel to map out scenarios (real and imaginary) to further develop the concepts related to personal financial well-being. 

  • Learning Outcome 1: Develop a sound understanding of what it takes to earn long-term success as an enterprise (business, family).
  • Learning Outcome 2: Gain insights into topics that impact personal finance decisions including, but not limited to: use of credit cards, savings accounts, expense reports, insurance, mortgages, income and taxes, budgeting, and cash maintenance. 

Instructor Biography

Robert “RJ” Quillinan joined the faculty of the Godbold College of Business in Spring 2023. Prior to his position at Gardner-Webb, Dr. Quillinan spent seven (7) years serving in a variety of capacities at the Charleston School of Law, in Charleston, SC, including: general counsel, chief financial officer, compliance manager, director of alumni relations, and adjunct professor. During that time Dr. Quillinan also served as an adjunct professor for the College of Charleston – teaching Business Law. Dr.

Quillinan’s career began in Venture Capital/Private Equity – focusing on corporate mergers and strategic buyouts. He also has experience in general construction management and legal representation and operating a boutique law firm focused on higher education compliance, corporate law, mergers & acquisitions, and contract negotiation.

When not on campus Dr. Quillinan enjoys: working in his woodshop, cooking for his family, reading novels, golfing, and spending time with his wife (Emily) and daughter (Magnolia Rand.)
